Macmillan Berkshire Benefits Service

The Macmillan Berkshire Benefits Service is a new initiative to support people who have a diagnosis of cancer and who live or receive treatment in Berkshire. This service is also available to their carers and family members.

This service is part of a wider partnership between Macmillan Cancer Care and Citizens Advice nationally.

The aim of the service is to offer Welfare Benefit and Debt Advice to cancer patients, their families and their carers. The service will also signpost or refer clients to other agencies or organisations (including Reading Citizens Advice Bureau) to access further help with a range of other issues (including Housing, Employment, Immigration etc.).

The service will be provided both at Wexham Park Hospital (incorporating patients from King Edward VII and Heatherwood Hospital) all day Monday and at the Royal Berkshire Cancer Centre Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Clients will be seen using an appointment system initially, although long term plans may involve drop-in sessions. Referrals will be accepted through self referral, front line health professionals and other organisation supporting people with cancer. Referrals can be made in the following way:

Via telephone on 0118 9523027

An answer machine is in operation 7 days a week/24 hours a day. A short message can be left leaving client contact details and a member of the MacMillan Team will contact the client usually within 48 hours maximum. Where appropriate, an appointment with a Welfare Benefit/Debt Adviser will be made for the client to coincide with their treatment at the respective hospital wherever possible.

Via Email at macmillan@readingcab.org.uk

A short message via email can be sent by either the client or their health professional or a referring organisation. If an email referral is received from a health professional or a referring organisation a reply will be sent electronically, attaching a Referral Form for completion. Once the completed Referral Form is received at the Bureau the client will be contacted by a member of the MacMillan Team usually within 48 hours maximum. Where appropriate, an appointment with a Welfare Benefit/Debt Adviser will be made for the client.

Via Fax on 0118 9523050
